Over our 50 years in business we have developed considerable expertise in earthmoving and civil engineering. This level of expertise and experience allows George Killoughery Ltd to undertake contracts both in the role of principal contractor and specialist sub-contractor, covering all aspects of earthworks from small housing projects/developments to major civil engineering works.
To compliment our services we have a comprehensive fleet of liveried modern plant controlled by our fully trained and experienced operators with the option of full sweet of testing and grading conducted using UKAS certified laboratories.
- Bulk excavation
- Creating lagoons, ponds and reservoirs
- Cleaning out silted-up lakes and ponds
- Level cut and fill projects to sites or fields for new development
- Land remediation
The cleanup of sites is costly, time consuming and requiring a lot of labour and equipment. Throughout previous decades, disposal to landfill has been seen as a quick and simple method of site remediation. However, whilst ‘dig and dump’ was previously a cheap option, the lack of suitable landfill voids together with the removal of the Landfill Tax exemption for contaminated land has substantially increased disposal costs. With Landfill Tax increasing at £8/tonne/annum, these costs are set to escalate year on year. Through its in-house expertise George Killoughery Ltd can assist in the selection and treatment (or reduction in volume) for disposal of the contaminated soils to minimise the financial burden on construction projects. We can provide both on-site treatment techniques or we can offer integrated waste handling and remediation at one of our 3 Waste Management Facilities, minimising the Landfill Tax burden.
We can provide a comprehensive range of technologies capable of remediating soil without the need for disposal to landfill, including the treatment of:
- Hydrocarbon & Chlorinated Solvents Contamination
- Asbestos Contaminated Soils
- Heavy Metal Contaminated Soils
- Japanese Knotweed/Giant Hogweed Contaminated Soils
Dubai Ports (DP World), London Gateway Port, Shellhaven – 2012-Present
Our works on this multi-billion pound scheme is a demolition, obstruction removal & crushing package. The onsite works include crushing the raw material into Type 1, 6F5, 6F3, 10mm Recycled Shingle, 20mm Recycled Shingle, 40mm Recycled Shingle & 1A fill. All these materials are re-used on site not only reducing carbon footprint but also providing a significant cost saving to our client.
Fiveways School Construction, Croydon – 2016
On this project we were contracted to excavation and remove all materials.
The excavation was to allow for a floating base (foundation) for a new primary school.
Being a floating base foundation, we needed to dig an extra 750mm wider than the dimensions of the build to allow for steel fixings and shuttering creating a much larger amount material than main contractors expected. To ease this problem we stockpiled a large quantity of top soil at a safe distance from the excavation for reinstatement. The remaining material was removed to approved inert waste sites.
Project Challenges / Site Restrictions
- Work times were restricted due to the sites close proximity to residential areas.
- As a result HGV lorries having to be brought straight on to site on arrival (due to local traffic restrictions) a careful management system had to be adapted to negate site congestion and allow for smooth running of the project.
